Addressing Broken Capillaries

Monday, 2 September 2013 — Please note: the preferred sunscreen (and minimum daily treatment) for addressing broken capillaries has been revised and is now the Melbourne Dermatology Broken Capillaries Sunscreen SPF 30+.

Broken Capillaries on the Face (Severe)

Dilated/broken capillaries within the skin have a twisted appearance and whiten (blanche) on pressure.

Broken capillaries are addressed as follows:

  • Severe or old broken capillaries — IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Laser Treatment(s); small—spot size Nd:YAG laser using a pulse width of 20 ms or higher is effective in clearing a significant percentage of broken capillaries in a single treatment with minimal side effects.

A copy of the study into Variable-Pulse Nd:YAG Laser for broken capillaries is available.

  • Prevention of further broken capillaries and reduction in the redness of capillaries — daily topical antioxidant use, daily zinc oxide or parsol based sunscreen use and nightly retinol use (outlined below).

Melbourne Dermatology has compiled a limited number of easy to use solutions for patients with broken capillaries.

These protocols are aimed at:

  • helping prevent and treat existing broken capillaries, and

  • to prepare patients for the best possible outcome of any subsequent laser treatment — minimizing likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and poor clearance of broken capillaries.

The following treatments include a complimentary copy of the study into Variable-Pulse Nd:YAG Laser with which patients contemplating clinical treatment of their broken capillaries should be familiar.

For patients needing to limit the development of further broken capillaries, with normal to dry skin of any age and condition:

Obagi Rosaclear Hydrating Complexion Correction

Obagi Rosaclear Hydrating Complexion Correction

Obagi Rosaclear Hydrating Complexion Correction is a moisturizing, soothing and anti-inflammatory skin protectant.

This delicately-textured product helps counteract and screen redness with titanium dioxide and light-reflective colourless micronized minerals (mica and iron oxide) instead of commonly used green tint.

Rosaclear Hydrating Complexion Correction physically protects the skin using dimethicone, titanium dioxide and ultrafine colloidal oatmeal to help prevent environmental rosacea triggers from taking their toll on skin and its capillaries.

Soothing and anti-inflammatory agents (allantoin, bisabolol, arnica, gorgonian, licorice) help diminish redness.

Beta glucans accelerate skin barrier repair and enhance the functioning of macrophages to strengthen the skin's self protection mechanisms (langerhans cells).

Aloe and glycerin are used as a high-tolerance moisturizer.

Iron oxides and mica in Rosaclear Hydrating Complexion Correction optically diffuse the appearance of redness and imperfections such as as broken capillaries, papules and pustules.

Facial Spider Veins — Information and Solutions

Spider veins (also known as telangectasias), such as those which appear on the nose and cheeks, are treated as follows:

Existing Spider Veins

Those which have already broken can only be treated using a vascular laser such as VersaPulse (by Coherent). This treatment requires a referral from your General Practitioner to a Dermatologist (US Search; AU).

Use a topical retinoid for at least two weeks prior to vascular laser treatments to lessen any likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Swollen (as yet unbroken) Spider Veins

Spider veins threatening breakage can often be saved or made even more amenable to vascular laser treatment with a topical vitamin C such as Skinceuticals C E Ferulic (all skin types, but especially normal/dry), Skinceuticals Serum 20 (all skin types), or Jan Marini C-ESTA Serum (all skin types).

Alternatively, Gernetic Veinulo Special Broken Capillaries Treatment Spray Phials and Vasco Broken Capillaries Treatment Cream help strengthen capillaries while encouraging blood circulation to prevent their collapse. These two Gernetic treatments are not recommended for extremely sensitive or flush-prone skin.

You should give these treatments 4-6 months to realize their full benefits.

Prevention of Spider Veins

Prevention is always better than cure — and nearly always less expensive!

AM use of a topical vitamin C serum or cream combined with a true broad spectrum sunscreen, and nightly use of a topical retinoid are currently the best means to preventing spider veins.

If you've already developed spider veins, start prevention as early as possible to prevent and minimize any further unwanted red developments.

Obagi Rosaclear Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30

Obagi Rosaclear Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30

Obagi Rosaclear Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30 is a superior all-physical sunscreen comprising an extremely high zinc oxide content (15.5%) and titanium dioxide (2%) with a soft, natural tint and optically corrective alumina, mica and iron oxide.

Unlike other high concentration zinc sunscreens (e.g. Megan Gale, UV Tripleguard), Rosaclear Skin Balancing Sun Protection wears elegantly and is not water-resistant, making it easy to remove at the end of the day, reducing the likelihood of skin irritation from prolonged facial cleansing.

A rare sunscreen product, providing extremely high, hypoallergenic UVA and UVB protection and optical diffusers which disguise redness, blotchiness, rosacea papules and pustules without coloured camouflage.

Obagi Rosaclear Skin Balancing Sun Protection SPF 30 helps prevent photodamage associated with rosacea while helping prevent UV and IR-induced rosacea symptoms.

Please Note: in case of broken capillaries, the preferred sunscreen is Melbourne Dermatology Broken Capillaries Sunscreen SPF 30+.

Broken Capillaries on the Face (Severe)

Dilated/broken capillaries within the skin that have a twisted appearance and that whiten (blanche) on pressure.

Gernetic Vasco — Facial Blotchyness/Puffy Eyes/Dark Circles/Broken Capillaries

Vascularized blood supply to the dermis is everything to the long term health and daily youthful behaviour of the entire skin structure.

  • Sluggish or smoker's skin is rapidly brightened due to enhanced oxygen and nutrient uptake — ongoing use revitalises skin more durably.
  • People suffering from puffy eyes on a regular basis can rapidly drain excess fluids from under the eyelids and from the immediate eye area by using Vasco daily.
  • Any existing broken capillaries are protected from further breakage — existing ones are lessened with continual care.
  • Unbroken capillaries are rendered more elastic and resistant to breakage.

Any dull and lifeless skin can benefit from Vasco, however its a particularly good booster at the commencement of an anti-aging treatment.

Tripeptide glutamylcysteinylglycine in Vasco acts against the formation of deeper wrinkles resulting from glycation (a permanent effect of too much sugar on skin's collagen fibres, ultimately leading to their self-adhesion and collapse).

Treatment of Broken Capillaries — Skinceuticals C E Ferulic (Topical Vitamin C) and Copper Bromide Laser

Monday, 2 September 2013 — Please note: the preferred sunscreen (and minimum daily treatment) for broken capillaries has been revised and is now the Melbourne Dermatology Broken Capillaries Sunscreen SPF 30+.

I'm 24 years old and i am very concerned about broken capillaries on my cheeks that first started appearing when i was 17 years old.

I tried cosmetic laser (with the copper bromide laser) on a small part of the cheek and it did collapse the capillaries on that area but the skin went very blotchy (white) and i didn't go through with the whole procedure because it would have looked very odd.

Is there anything that i can try to help my skin? ... I'm very self conscious about them. Thank you John.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic used underneath Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30, Skinceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20 or another sunscreen each morning will minimize existing broken capillaries and help prevent further broken capillary formation.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic will also better prepare skin for any broken capillary laser treatments in the future.

Regards,

Peter.

Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 with PhytoMelanin — Tube

SPF 30 Waterproof.

Jan Marini Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 with PhytoMelanin — Tube

Jan Marini Skin Research Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 Waterproof combines a revolutionary microscopic sponge encapsulation system, state of the art sun protection, a powerful antioxidant component and a superb hydrating complex.

Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant incorporates a combination of conventional sunscreening agents along with two newly developed non-chemical sun blocking substances that provide enhanced sun protection as well as exceptional skin recovery benefits. The result is a formulation that ensures continuous coverage for daily or extended exposure conditions with a broad spectrum SPF 30 rating that is also waterproof for times when perspiration or water sports may be a factor.

Unlike traditional sunscreens, Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant never feels heavy or oily, but instead gives a lasting oil-free matte finish that leaves facial skin with a soft silky conditioned effect as it aids in increasing and sustaining moisture content. This is due to microscopic sponge technology. Microscopic sponges are polymer spheres with huge numbers of interconnecting spaces that can entrap and absorb unwanted materials such as excess oils. Their nearly unlimited capacity enables the elimination of undesirable shine to be monitored continuously for all day control.

Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant may be used with any other topical therapies or moisturizers.
