Technical Data

Pigmentation is the result of a very complex process that occurs deep-down in the skin at the boundary between the epidermis and the dermis. Melanocytes (cells which produce melanin) make up 13% of the epidermal cells. They contain specialized corpuscles called melanosomes which are responsible for the pigmentation process.

Tyrosin (an amino acid present in the epidermis) is transformed into a compound known as DOPA under the enzyme-action of tyrosinase. Under the action of this same enzyme, DOPA is again transformed into other components to finally arrive at the melanin which colors the skin. These reactions require the presence of copper and (particularly in caucasian skins) are enhanced by exposure to UV-rays.
